What is a birth chart?
A birth chart, or natal chart, is a drawing of the sky as seen from where you were born at the moment you were born. It shows which sign the Sun, Moon and planets were in, how the sky divides into twelve houses, and the angles the planets form with each other. Two people born on the same day share most planetary signs; the ascendant and houses depend on the time and place.
How to read it
In astrology the planet says what is involved, the sign how it is expressed, and the house which area of life it shows up in. Venus in Libra in the 7th house, for example, brings together relationships (Venus), a wish for balance and harmony (Libra) and partnerships (7th house). Aspects describe how planets affect each other: trines and sextiles are read as easy, squares and oppositions as tense.

How it is calculated
Your birth time is converted to universal time (UTC) using the time zone rules that applied at your birth place on that date. Planet positions are calculated for that instant; the ascendant, midheaven and Placidus house cusps follow from local sidereal time and the latitude of the birth place. Compared with the Swiss Ephemeris used by professional astrology software, the difference stays below a hundredth of a degree for the planets and a thousandth for the house cusps.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need my birth time for a birth chart?
Your birth date is enough for the signs of the planets. The ascendant, midheaven (MC) and houses need your birth time and place, because they change quickly through the day. Without a time, the calculator shows the planets and says what is missing.
Which house system does it use?
Placidus, the house system most astrologers use. Inside the polar circles (beyond about 66° latitude) Placidus cannot be calculated, so the chart switches to whole-sign houses there and says so.
What does the R next to a planet mean?
Retrograde: at the moment you were born, the planet appeared from Earth to move backwards across the sky. It does not really reverse; the effect comes from the relative motion of Earth and the planet in their orbits.
Does a birth chart tell the future?
No. A birth chart is a drawing of the sky at the moment you were born. Astrology associates these placements with themes; this page describes them as a starting point for reflection, not as a statement about what will happen to you.
