What is a rising sign?
Your rising sign, or ascendant, is the zodiac sign rising over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. As the Earth turns, all twelve signs rise in turn over the course of a day, each for about two hours. That is why a birth date alone is not enough: the rising sign needs your birth time and place.
Astrology associates the rising sign with first impressions, how you enter new situations and how you come across to others. It marks the start of the first house in a birth chart.
How it is calculated
Your birth time is first converted to universal time (UTC) using the time zone rules that applied at your birth place on that date, including daylight saving time. The longitude of the birth place then gives local sidereal time, and the latitude gives the degree of the zodiac crossing the eastern horizon at that moment. The Sun and Moon positions are calculated for the same instant.

What is the difference between a rising sign and a Sun sign?
Your Sun sign is the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born, and it stays the same for about a month. Your rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, and it changes about every two hours. Two people born on the same day can share a Sun sign and have different rising signs.
What if I am not sure of my birth time?
The ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. If your time is uncertain by half an hour and the result sits in the middle of a sign, it is very likely right. If it lands on the border between two signs, the calculator says so; a birth certificate, hospital record or a relative can help pin the time down.

The birth time is converted to UTC using the historical time zone rules for the birth place, including past daylight saving changes. The ascendant then follows from local sidereal time and latitude. Compared with the Swiss Ephemeris used by professional astrology software, the difference stays below a thousandth of a degree.
