Abjad Value of Names: Table of 70 Common Names
Quick Take: The abjad value of 70 common names, computed from their Arabic letters: Ali 110, Muhammad 92, Fatima 135. How the sum is worked out and why some names have two values.
The abjad value of a name is found by writing it in Arabic letters and adding the fixed number each letter carries. Below are the abjad values of 70 common Islamic and Middle Eastern names, with the working shown. Each value is computed from the letters. If your name is not listed, use the abjad calculator. Abjad is a traditional counting system; it does not say anything about what will happen in a person's life.
How to Calculate the Abjad Value of a Name
In the abjad system each of the 28 Arabic letters has a fixed value from 1 to 1000. Write the name in Arabic, then add the values. Two examples:
- Ali (علي): ع 70 + ل 30 + ي 10 = 110
- Muhammad (محمد): م 40 + ح 8 + م 40 + د 4 = 92

Why Some Names Have Two Values
Names ending in ة (ta marbuta), such as Fatima, Aisha and Khadija, are counted two ways. Some sources treat ة like ه and give it 5; others treat it like ت and give it 400. The second value is shown in brackets. There is no single rule, so follow the convention of the source you use.
Spelling matters too. English transliterations vary (Muhammad, Mohammed), and the abjad value comes from the Arabic spelling, not the Latin one. The table covers names whose Arabic spelling is well established.
Abjad vs Numerology
Abjad uses Arabic letters with values up to 1000. Pythagorean numerology gives Latin letters 1 to 9, reduces the sum to one digit and keeps 11, 22 and 33. So the same name gives different numbers in each system. To work out numbers from a name and birth date in the Latin alphabet, try the numerology calculator.
What Is Abjad Used For?
Abjad was widely used in Ottoman and Islamic culture. The best-known use is the chronogram, a phrase whose letters add up to a year, written to mark an event. Looking at the values of names is a matter of curiosity and tradition. A name's number is not evidence about the person who has that name. Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the abjad value of a name?
Write the name in Arabic letters and add the fixed value of each letter. Ali, for example, is ع (70) + ل (30) + ي (10) = 110. Diacritics and the shadda carry no value.
What is the abjad value of Muhammad?
Muhammad is written محمد: م (40) + ح (8) + م (40) + د (4) = 92.
Why do different websites give different abjad values for the same name?
There are two main reasons. One is spelling: a name may have more than one Arabic spelling. The other is ة (ta marbuta), which some traditions count as ه (5) and others as ت (400). Names such as Fatima therefore get two values.
Can the abjad value of a name tell you anything about a person?
No. Abjad is a traditional system of giving letters numerical values. It has been used for chronograms and name studies, but a name's number says nothing about the life of the person who carries it.
Is abjad the same as numerology?
No. Abjad assigns values from 1 to 1000 to Arabic letters. Pythagorean numerology assigns 1 to 9 to Latin letters and reduces the total to a single digit. The same name gives different numbers in the two systems.
