What Is Venus Retrograde?

Venus does not actually reverse. Earth and Venus orbit the Sun at different speeds, and at regular intervals Venus seems to slide backward against the stars as seen from Earth. That apparent motion is called retrograde. Venus retrogrades roughly every 19 months (its 584-day synodic cycle) and each one lasts about six weeks.

Over eight years the Sun-Venus conjunctions trace a five-pointed star around the zodiac, known as the pentagram of Venus.

Which Sign and Degrees?

This retrograde starts in Scorpio at about 8.5 degrees, moves back into Libra, and ends in Libra at about 22.9 degrees. The stretch between those two points is worth knowing if you have a planet or angle there in your chart: Venus crosses it three times (forward, backward, and forward again).

What Is the Shadow Period?

Astrologers describe a "shadow" before and after a retrograde. The pre-shadow starts when Venus first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct, on August 31. The post-shadow lasts until Venus passes the degree where the retrograde began, on December 15. In all, Venus themes can stay in focus for about three and a half months.
